The Brownbanded Bamboo Shark (Chiloscyllium punctatum) is a popular choice among marine aquarium enthusiasts seeking a unique and peaceful shark species. This bottom-dwelling shark is characterised by its distinctive brown bands and slender body, making it an attractive addition to suitably sized marine tanks.
Care Level: Moderate. This species requires stable water conditions and a well-maintained environment.
Temperament: Generally peaceful and shy, the Brownbanded Bamboo Shark is compatible with other non-aggressive tank mates. It is best kept singly or in a species-specific setup to avoid territorial disputes.
Diet: Carnivorous. Feed a varied diet of meaty foods such as shrimp, squid, and specialised shark pellets. Regular feeding 3-4 times per week is recommended.
Tank Requirements: A minimum tank size of 180 gallons (approximately 700 litres) is advised to provide ample swimming space and a suitable substrate for resting. The tank should have a sandy or fine gravel substrate to protect the shark’s delicate underside.
Water Parameters: Maintain stable marine conditions with a temperature range of 24-27°C, salinity of 1.020-1.025 SG, and pH between 8.1 and 8.4.
Lighting and Flow: Moderate lighting and gentle to moderate water flow mimic its natural habitat and reduce stress.
Placement: Provide plenty of hiding places using rockwork or PVC pipes to simulate caves and crevices. This encourages natural behaviour and reduces stress.
With proper care, the Brownbanded Bamboo Shark can live for many years in captivity, offering a fascinating and rewarding experience for marine aquarists.
