The Brownbanded Bamboo Shark (Chiloscyllium punctatum) is a popular choice among marine aquarium enthusiasts seeking a unique and peaceful shark species. This bottom-dwelling shark is characterised by its slender body and distinctive brown bands that fade as it matures.
Care Level: Moderate. This species requires stable water conditions and a well-maintained environment.
Temperament: Generally peaceful and shy, making it compatible with similarly non-aggressive tank mates. Avoid housing with very small fish that may be seen as prey.
Diet: Carnivorous. Feed a varied diet of meaty foods such as shrimp, squid, and specialised shark pellets. Feeding should be done 3-4 times per week.
Minimum Tank Size: At least 180 gallons (approx. 700 litres) to provide ample swimming space and a suitable substrate for resting.
Lighting Requirements: Standard marine aquarium lighting is sufficient; avoid overly bright conditions as this species prefers dimmer environments.
Water Flow: Moderate water flow mimicking natural reef conditions is ideal.
Placement: Provide a sandy or fine gravel substrate with plenty of hiding places such as caves or PVC pipes to mimic natural crevices.
Origin: Indo-Pacific region.
Maximum Size: Up to 1.2 metres (4 feet) in length.
Due to their size and specialised care requirements, Brownbanded Bamboo Sharks are best suited for experienced aquarists with large marine setups. Regular water quality monitoring and a secure tank lid are essential to prevent escapes.
