Chelmonops truncatus, commonly known as the truncated butterflyfish, is a captivating species prized for its unusual body shape and striking colouration. This large butterflyfish reaches a considerable size and is best suited to experienced marine aquarists who can provide the appropriate environment and care.
Care Level: Moderate to advanced. This species requires stable water conditions and a well-maintained aquarium.
Temperament and Compatibility: Generally peaceful but can be territorial towards conspecifics or similar species. Best kept singly or as a mated pair in a suitably large tank. Compatible with other non-aggressive fish species.
Diet: Omnivorous with a preference for meaty foods such as mysis shrimp, brine shrimp, and specialised marine fish diets. Supplement with algae-based foods to mimic natural feeding habits. Feeding multiple times daily is recommended to maintain health.
Minimum Tank Size: A minimum of 180 litres (approximately 50 gallons) is advised to provide ample swimming space and territory.
Lighting and Water Flow: Standard marine aquarium lighting is sufficient. Moderate water flow replicates natural reef conditions and supports fish health.
