Hemitaurichthys polylepis, commonly known as the Pyramid Butterflyfish, is a visually captivating species prized for its distinctive geometric pattern and peaceful nature. This small butterflyfish is best suited for larger, mature reef aquariums where it can be kept in groups, reflecting its natural schooling behaviour.
Care Level: Moderate to advanced. This species requires stable water parameters and a well-established tank.
Temperament and Compatibility: Generally peaceful and non-aggressive, Hemitaurichthys polylepis coexists well with other peaceful fish species. Avoid housing with highly territorial or aggressive tank mates. It is reef safe and does not typically nip at corals or invertebrates.
Diet: Omnivorous. Provide a varied diet including high-quality marine flakes, pellets, frozen mysis shrimp, brine shrimp, and finely chopped seafood. Supplement with algae-based foods to mimic natural feeding habits.
Minimum Tank Size: A minimum of 150 litres (approximately 40 gallons) is recommended to accommodate their active swimming and schooling behaviour.
Lighting and Water Flow: Standard reef aquarium lighting and moderate water flow are suitable. Ensure good water quality with stable parameters.
Placement: Mid to upper levels of the aquarium, where they can swim freely and feel secure within the environment.
Origin: Indo-Pacific region.
