Chaetodon semilarvatus, commonly known as the Yellow Butterflyfish, is a visually stunning species prized for its bright yellow body and characteristic black markings around the eyes and dorsal area. This large butterflyfish is a captivating addition to mature marine aquariums.
Care Level: Moderate to advanced. This species requires stable water conditions and a well-established tank.
Temperament: Generally peaceful but can be territorial towards conspecifics or similar species. Best kept singly or as a mated pair in large tanks.
Diet: Omnivorous. In the aquarium, provide a varied diet including high-quality marine flakes, pellets, frozen mysis shrimp, brine shrimp, and finely chopped seafood. Supplement with algae-based foods to mimic natural grazing.
Minimum Tank Size: 180 litres (approximately 50 gallons) or larger to provide ample swimming space and reduce territorial behaviour.
Reef Safety: With Caution. While generally reef safe, this species may nip at coral polyps or clam mantles. Monitor closely in reef setups.
Lighting Requirements: Standard marine aquarium lighting is sufficient. No special lighting needs.
Water Flow: Moderate water flow preferred to simulate natural reef environments.
Placement: Provide plenty of live rock for grazing and hiding spots. Avoid overcrowding to reduce stress.
Origin: Red Sea and Gulf of Aden.
Maximum Size: Up to 20 cm (approximately 8 inches) in length.
Due to its size and specific care requirements, the Yellow Butterflyfish is best suited for experienced marine aquarists with established systems. Regular water quality monitoring and a varied diet will help maintain health and vibrancy.
