The Chaetodon lineolatus, commonly known as the Lined Butterflyfish, is a visually captivating species prized for its elegant linear markings and graceful swimming behaviour. This large butterflyfish can reach up to 20 cm in length, making it a prominent addition to suitably sized marine aquariums.
Care Level: This species is best suited for advanced hobbyists due to its specialised dietary needs and sensitivity to water quality. Maintaining stable, pristine conditions is essential for its health and longevity.
Temperament and Compatibility: Generally peaceful but territorial, the Lined Butterflyfish can coexist with other non-aggressive tank mates. Avoid housing with overly aggressive or fin-nipping species. It is not reef safe as it may nip at corals and invertebrates.
Diet: In the aquarium, provide a varied diet including specialised frozen preparations, mysis shrimp, brine shrimp, and marine algae. Supplement with high-quality marine fish pellets designed for butterflyfish. Regular feeding multiple times per day is recommended to meet its nutritional needs.
Minimum Tank Size: A minimum of 180 litres (approximately 50 gallons) is recommended to provide ample swimming space and reduce territorial stress.
Water Parameters: Maintain temperature between 24-27°C, salinity at 1.023-1.025 SG, pH 8.1-8.4, and stable water chemistry with low nitrates and phosphates.
Lighting and Water Flow: Moderate lighting and gentle to moderate water flow replicate its natural reef environment.
Placement: Provide plenty of live rock for grazing and hiding spots. Ensure the aquarium is mature and stable before introducing this species.
Origin: Native to the Indo-Pacific region, particularly coral reefs around Indonesia and the Philippines.
