Chaetodon interruptus, commonly known as the Interrupted Butterflyfish, is a captivating addition to any mature marine aquarium. This medium-sized butterflyfish is recognised by its unique interrupted vertical bands and vibrant colours, making it a standout specimen for experienced hobbyists.
Care Level: Moderate to advanced. This species requires stable water parameters and a well-established tank environment.
Temperament and Compatibility: Generally peaceful but can be territorial towards conspecifics or similar species. Best kept singly or as a mated pair in a tank with ample space. Compatible with other non-aggressive fish but caution is advised when housing with very small or delicate species.
Diet: Omnivorous. Requires a varied diet including high-quality marine flakes, pellets, frozen mysis shrimp, brine shrimp, and occasional meaty foods. Supplement with algae-based foods to mimic natural feeding habits.
Tank Requirements: Minimum tank size of 150 litres (40 US gallons) recommended to provide sufficient swimming space and territories. A mature aquarium with plenty of live rock for grazing and hiding spots is essential.
Water Parameters: Maintain stable marine conditions with temperature between 24-27°C, pH 8.1-8.4, and salinity 1.023-1.025 SG.
Reef Compatibility: With Caution. May nip at coral polyps and sessile invertebrates; not recommended for sensitive reef tanks.
Origin: Native to the Western Indian Ocean, including the East African coast.
