The Falcula Butterflyfish (Chaetodon falcula) is a visually stunning species prized for its distinctive black and yellow markings and elegant shape. This small butterflyfish is best suited to mature marine aquariums where it can thrive in stable water conditions.
Care Level: Moderate to advanced. This species requires a well-maintained environment and consistent water quality.
Temperament and Compatibility: Generally peaceful but can be territorial towards conspecifics or similar species. Best kept singly or as a mated pair in larger tanks. Compatible with other non-aggressive fish but caution is advised with very small or delicate species.
Diet: Omnivorous. In captivity, provide a varied diet including high-quality frozen or prepared foods such as mysis shrimp, brine shrimp, and specialised butterflyfish preparations. Supplement with algae and live rock grazing opportunities.
Minimum Tank Size: At least 150 litres (40 gallons) to provide sufficient swimming space and territories.
Reef Compatibility: With Caution. May nip at coral polyps and sessile invertebrates, so suitable for fish-only or well-established reef tanks with robust corals.
Origin: Indo-Pacific region.
Maximum Size: Up to 15 cm (6 inches).
Lighting and Water Flow: Standard reef lighting and moderate water flow are appropriate to mimic natural conditions.
Placement: Provide ample live rock for grazing and hiding spots. Avoid overcrowding to reduce stress and aggression.
