Chaetodon capistratus, commonly referred to as the Caribbean Longsnout Butterflyfish, is a visually stunning species prized for its distinctive black eye band and elongated snout. This large butterflyfish is native to the western Atlantic Ocean, particularly around coral reefs in the Caribbean Sea.
Care Level: This species is best suited for advanced hobbyists due to its specialised dietary needs and sensitivity to water quality. A minimum tank size of 150 litres is recommended to provide ample swimming space and to accommodate its active nature.
Temperament and Compatibility: Generally peaceful but can be territorial towards conspecifics or similar species. It is compatible with other non-aggressive fish but should not be housed with overly aggressive tank mates. Avoid keeping with small invertebrates as they may be preyed upon.
Diet: Omnivorous with a preference for sponges, coral polyps, and small invertebrates in the wild. In captivity, provide a varied diet including high-quality frozen mysis shrimp, marine algae, and specialised sponge-based preparations to ensure nutritional balance.
Reef Safety: With Caution – may nip at coral polyps and sessile invertebrates, so careful monitoring is advised in reef setups.
Lighting and Water Flow: Standard marine aquarium lighting and moderate water flow are suitable to mimic natural reef conditions.
Placement: Provide plenty of live rock for grazing and hiding spots. Ensure stable water parameters and a mature tank environment to reduce stress.
Origin: Western Atlantic, Caribbean Sea.
Maximum Size: Up to 20 cm (approximately 8 inches).
