The Baroness Butterflyfish (Chaetodon baronessa) is a visually stunning species prized for its bold yellow bands contrasted with white and black markings. This large butterflyfish can grow up to 20 cm in length and is best suited to experienced hobbyists due to its specialised care needs.
Temperament and Compatibility: Generally peaceful but territorial, the Baroness Butterflyfish can be kept with other non-aggressive species. Avoid housing with overly aggressive fish or other butterflyfish to reduce stress and territorial disputes.
Diet: This species is omnivorous, feeding primarily on coral polyps, small invertebrates, and algae in the wild. In captivity, provide a varied diet including high-quality frozen mysis, brine shrimp, marine algae, and specialised butterflyfish preparations to ensure optimal health.
Tank Requirements: A minimum tank size of 150 litres is recommended to provide ample swimming space and territory. The aquarium should be mature with plenty of live rock to mimic its natural reef habitat and offer grazing opportunities.
Water Parameters: Maintain stable marine conditions with temperature between 24-27°C, salinity at 1.023-1.025 SG, pH 8.1-8.4, and moderate water flow.
Reef Compatibility: With Caution – While the Baroness Butterflyfish may nip at coral polyps, some individuals adapt well in reef tanks. Monitor behaviour closely and provide alternative food sources to minimise coral predation.
