The Chaetodon auriga, or Threadfin Butterflyfish, is a visually stunning species prized by marine aquarium enthusiasts. This extra large specimen displays the characteristic white body with black diagonal bands and a distinctive black spot near the tail, complemented by a long thread-like extension on the dorsal fin.
Temperament and Compatibility: Generally peaceful but can be territorial, especially in smaller tanks or when kept with similar species. Best housed singly or as a mated pair in a well-established community aquarium. Avoid aggressive tank mates and other butterflyfish species to reduce stress.
Diet: Omnivorous with a preference for meaty foods such as mysis shrimp, brine shrimp, and specialised marine fish pellets. Supplement diet with algae-based foods to mimic natural feeding habits.
Tank Requirements: Due to its size and active swimming behaviour, a minimum tank size of 180 litres (approximately 50 gallons) is recommended. Provide plenty of live rock for grazing and hiding places. Maintain stable water parameters with regular monitoring.
Care Level: Intermediate to advanced. Requires stable water quality and a varied diet to thrive.
Reef Compatibility: With Caution. May nip at coral polyps and sessile invertebrates, so caution is advised in reef setups.
