Chaetodermis penicilligerus is a distinctive filefish species prized for its unusual appearance and intriguing behaviour. This extra large specimen is suitable for experienced marine aquarists who can provide the specialised care it requires.
Temperament and Compatibility: Generally peaceful but can be territorial towards conspecifics or similar species. Best kept singly or in a large tank with ample hiding places. Compatible with other non-aggressive fish species but caution is advised with smaller, timid fish.
Diet: Omnivorous with a preference for meaty foods such as mysis shrimp, brine shrimp, and finely chopped seafood. Supplement diet with algae-based foods to mimic natural grazing behaviour.
Tank Requirements: Minimum tank size of 180 litres (approximately 50 gallons) recommended to provide sufficient swimming space and territories. Stable water parameters and mature aquarium environment essential.
Water Conditions: Maintain temperature between 24-27°C, salinity at 1.023-1.025 SG, and pH 8.1-8.4. Moderate water flow preferred to replicate natural reef conditions.
Placement: Provide plenty of live rock for shelter and grazing. Position in mid to lower levels of the aquarium where it can explore and feed comfortably.
Additional Notes: This species is not commonly tank-bred and may require acclimation to captive conditions. Regular observation is recommended to monitor health and behaviour.
