Cephalopholis sonnerati, commonly called the Coral Hind, is a beautifully patterned grouper native to the Indo-Pacific region. This small variant is suitable for larger marine aquariums and is prized for its vibrant colours and distinctive markings.
Care Level: Moderate to advanced. This species requires stable water parameters and a well-established tank.
Temperament: Semi-aggressive. It may show territorial behaviour, especially towards smaller fish or conspecifics.
Diet: Carnivorous. Feed a varied diet of meaty foods such as crustaceans, fish fillets, and specialised frozen marine preparations.
Minimum Tank Size: At least 180 litres (approximately 50 gallons) to provide ample swimming space and territories.
Compatibility: Best kept with similarly sized or larger non-aggressive fish. Avoid housing with very small or timid species due to predatory tendencies.
Reef Safety: With Caution. May prey on smaller invertebrates and fish; not recommended for delicate reef setups.
Lighting and Water Flow: Standard marine aquarium lighting and moderate water flow are suitable.
Placement: Provide plenty of live rock for hiding and ambush spots. Ensure open swimming areas are available.
