Cephalopholis miniata, also known as the Coral Grouper, is a visually stunning marine fish characterised by its bright red body adorned with numerous small blue spots. This large grouper species is a popular choice among experienced marine aquarists due to its striking appearance and interesting behaviour.
Care Level: Moderate to advanced. This species requires stable water conditions and a suitably large aquarium to thrive.
Temperament and Compatibility: Cephalopholis miniata is a predatory fish with a semi-aggressive temperament. It is best kept singly or with other large, robust tank mates. Avoid housing with small, peaceful fish as they may be seen as prey.
Diet: Carnivorous. Feed a varied diet of meaty foods such as chopped fish, crustaceans, and specialised frozen marine preparations. Regular feeding 3-4 times per week is recommended to maintain health.
Minimum Tank Size: At least 300 litres (approximately 80 gallons) to provide ample swimming space and territory.
Lighting and Water Flow: Standard marine aquarium lighting is sufficient. Moderate water flow mimicking natural reef currents is ideal.
Placement: Provide plenty of live rock for hiding and ambush hunting. Ensure secure tank lids as groupers can be strong and may attempt to jump.
Origin: Indo-Pacific region.
Maximum Size: Up to 40 cm (approximately 16 inches) in captivity.
With proper care, the Cephalopholis miniata can be a captivating centrepiece in a suitably sized marine aquarium.
