Cephalopholis polleni is a captivating grouper species prized for its vivid colours and intricate markings. This small to medium-sized fish is best suited to experienced aquarists due to its specific care requirements and territorial nature.
Temperament and Compatibility: This species can be territorial and somewhat aggressive, especially towards smaller or more passive tank mates. It is recommended to keep Cephalopholis polleni with similarly sized or larger robust fish to minimise stress and aggression. Avoid housing with very small or delicate species.
Diet: Cephalopholis polleni is carnivorous and thrives on a varied diet of meaty foods such as live or frozen crustaceans, fish, and specialised marine pellets. Feeding should be done 2-3 times daily to maintain optimal health.
Tank Requirements: A minimum tank size of 180 litres (approximately 50 gallons) is recommended to provide ample swimming space and territory. The aquarium should include plenty of live rock for hiding places and to simulate its natural reef environment.
Water Parameters: Maintain stable marine conditions with temperature between 24-27°C, salinity at 1.023-1.025 SG, pH 8.1-8.4, and moderate water flow. Regular water changes and high water quality are essential.
Reef Compatibility: Cephalopholis polleni is not reef safe as it may prey on smaller invertebrates and fish within a reef setup.
With proper care, this grouper can be a stunning and rewarding addition to a marine aquarium.
