Centropyge cocosensis, commonly known as the Cocos Angelfish, is a captivating dwarf angelfish species prized for its vivid blue and yellow hues. This species is suitable for marine aquarists with some experience due to its specific care needs and territorial temperament.
Care Level: Moderate to advanced care is recommended. This species requires stable water parameters and a well-established aquarium.
Temperament: Semi-aggressive. Centropyge cocosensis can be territorial, especially towards conspecifics and similar species. It is best kept singly or as a mated pair in larger tanks.
Diet: Omnivorous. Provide a varied diet including marine algae, spirulina, mysis shrimp, and specialised angelfish preparations to ensure optimal health and vibrant colouration.
Minimum Tank Size: A minimum of 120 litres (approximately 30 gallons) is recommended to provide adequate swimming space and territories.
Reef Safety: With Caution. While generally considered reef safe, Centropyge cocosensis may nip at corals and sessile invertebrates, especially if underfed or stressed.
Lighting Requirements: Standard marine aquarium lighting is sufficient. Ensure lighting supports any corals or invertebrates housed alongside.
Water Flow: Moderate water flow is ideal to mimic natural reef conditions and maintain water quality.
Placement: Provide plenty of live rock for grazing and hiding spots to reduce stress and territorial disputes.
Origin: Native to the Cocos (Keeling) Islands region in the eastern Indian Ocean.
Maximum Size: Typically grows up to 10 cm (4 inches) in length.
Centropyge cocosensis is a visually stunning addition to marine aquariums, but requires careful husbandry to thrive. Regular water changes, stable water chemistry, and a balanced diet will ensure a healthy and vibrant fish.
