Native to rocky reef habitats, this species thrives in tanks that replicate its natural environment with plenty of live rock and crevices for shelter.
Care Level: Moderate to advanced. This species requires stable water parameters and a well-established aquarium.
Temperament: Generally peaceful but may exhibit territorial behaviour towards conspecifics or similar basslets. Best kept singly or as a mated pair in larger tanks.
Diet: Carnivorous. Accepts a varied diet including frozen mysis shrimp, brine shrimp, finely chopped seafood, and high-quality pellet or flake foods formulated for carnivorous marine fish.
Minimum Tank Size: A minimum of 120 litres (approximately 30 gallons) is recommended to provide sufficient swimming space and territory.
Lighting Requirements: Standard reef lighting is suitable; no special lighting needs.
Water Flow: Moderate water movement mimicking natural reef currents is ideal.
Placement: Provide ample rockwork with caves and overhangs to allow hiding and reduce stress.
Origin: Native to the coastal waters of South Africa.
Maximum Size: Up to 10 cm (4 inches) in length.
This species is reef safe with caution, as it may prey on very small invertebrates or fish fry. Careful monitoring is advised when housed in reef tanks with delicate or tiny inhabitants.
