Anisotremus virginicus, commonly known as the Porkfish, is a striking snapper species prized for its bold yellow and black banding and active behaviour. Our specimens are tank-bred, ensuring better adaptation to captive conditions and reducing wild collection impact.
Care Level: Moderate – suitable for hobbyists with some marine aquarium experience.
Temperament: Generally peaceful but can be territorial towards conspecifics or similar species. Best kept singly or in a large tank with ample space.
Diet: Omnivorous – accepts a varied diet including meaty foods such as mysis shrimp, brine shrimp, chopped seafood, and high-quality marine pellets or flakes.
Minimum Tank Size: 180 litres (approximately 50 gallons) to provide sufficient swimming space and territory.
Reef Safety: With Caution – may nip at small invertebrates or sessile invertebrates; not recommended for delicate reef tanks.
Lighting Requirements: Standard marine aquarium lighting is sufficient.
Water Flow: Moderate water movement to simulate natural reef environments.
Placement: Mid to lower levels of the aquarium, with plenty of hiding places such as rockwork caves and crevices.
Origin: Western Atlantic, including the Caribbean Sea and Gulf of Mexico.
Maximum Size: Up to 30 cm (12 inches) in captivity.
Tank-bred specimens are generally more resilient and adapt well to aquarium life, making them a premium choice for marine fish enthusiasts in the UK.
