Alectis indica, known as the Indian Threadfish, is a large and impressive member of the Carangidae family. This species is prized for its distinctive elongated dorsal and anal fin filaments and its striking silver body with subtle greenish hues.
Care Level: Moderate to advanced. Due to its size and active swimming behaviour, it is best suited for experienced marine aquarists.
Temperament and Compatibility: Indian Threadfish are generally semi-aggressive and can be territorial, especially in confined spaces. They are best housed with similarly sized robust fish and should not be kept with very small or timid species. Avoid housing with invertebrates as they may be preyed upon.
Diet: Carnivorous. Feed a varied diet of meaty foods such as chopped seafood, crustaceans, and high-quality marine pellets or flakes. Regular feeding 2-3 times daily is recommended to maintain optimal health.
Minimum Tank Size: Due to their potential size of up to 90 cm, a minimum tank volume of 500 litres is advised to provide ample swimming space.
Lighting and Water Flow: Standard marine aquarium lighting is sufficient. Moderate to strong water flow mimicking natural reef currents is ideal to keep the fish active and healthy.
Placement: Provide open swimming areas with some large rock structures for shelter. Avoid overcrowding to reduce stress and aggression.
Origin: Indian Ocean and Western Pacific regions.
Maximum Size: Up to 90 cm in length.
Reef Safety: No. This species is predatory and not suitable for reef tanks containing small fish or invertebrates.
