The Platax orbicularis, commonly known as the Orbicular Batfish, is a captivating addition to larger marine aquaria. This tank-bred specimen offers hobbyists a sustainable option to enjoy the unique silhouette and graceful swimming behaviour of this species.
Care Level: Moderate to advanced. The Orbicular Batfish requires stable water conditions and a suitably large tank to thrive.
Temperament and Compatibility: Generally peaceful, Platax orbicularis can be kept with other non-aggressive fish of similar size. Avoid housing with overly territorial or predatory species. They may become shy when first introduced but often acclimate well over time.
Diet: Omnivorous. Provide a varied diet including high-quality marine pellets, frozen mysis shrimp, brine shrimp, and vegetable matter such as spirulina flakes. Feeding multiple times daily in small portions is recommended.
Minimum Tank Size: At least 300 litres (approximately 80 gallons) to accommodate their potential adult size and swimming needs.
Water Parameters: Maintain stable marine conditions with temperature between 24-27°C, salinity 1.020-1.025 SG, pH 8.1-8.4, and moderate water flow.
Lighting and Placement: Moderate lighting is sufficient. Provide ample open swimming space with some rockwork or artificial structures for shelter and resting.
Origin: Tank-bred in controlled aquaculture facilities, ensuring ethical sourcing and reduced wild collection impact.
Maximum Size: Up to 40 cm (16 inches) in captivity, though growth rates vary.
