The Convict Tang (Acanthurus triostegus) is a popular choice among marine aquarium hobbyists due to its bold black and white striped pattern and active swimming behaviour. Native to the Indo-Pacific region, this species is primarily herbivorous, grazing on algae and helping to maintain a balanced ecosystem within the aquarium.
Care Level: Moderate. This species requires stable water parameters and a well-established tank with plenty of swimming space.
Temperament: Generally peaceful but can be territorial towards conspecifics or similar-shaped tangs. Best kept singly or in a large tank with ample hiding spots.
Diet: Primarily herbivorous. Offer a varied diet including marine algae, spirulina, and high-quality herbivore flakes or pellets. Supplement with occasional meaty foods to ensure balanced nutrition.
Minimum Tank Size: 180 litres (approximately 50 gallons) to provide sufficient swimming space and reduce territorial behaviour.
Reef Safety: With Caution. While generally reef safe, the Convict Tang may nip at some sessile invertebrates or soft corals, especially if underfed.
Lighting and Water Flow: Standard marine aquarium lighting and moderate water flow are suitable to mimic natural reef conditions.
Placement: Provide plenty of live rock for grazing and hiding. Ensure open swimming areas to accommodate their active nature.
Origin: Indo-Pacific region.
Maximum Size: Up to 25 cm (10 inches) in length.
