Acanthurus sohal, commonly known as the Sohal Tang, is a visually stunning and highly active species native to the Red Sea. This small variant is ideal for marine aquarists with experience, as it requires a spacious tank and careful compatibility considerations.
Temperament and Compatibility: Sohal Tangs are known for their territorial and sometimes aggressive behaviour, especially towards conspecifics or similar-shaped tangs. It is best kept singly or with other robust species in a large aquarium to minimise conflict.
Diet: Primarily herbivorous, the Sohal Tang thrives on a diet rich in marine algae and seaweed. Supplement with high-quality dried seaweed sheets, spirulina, and occasional meaty foods to ensure balanced nutrition.
Tank Requirements: Due to their active swimming nature and potential size, a minimum tank size of 180 litres (approximately 50 gallons) is recommended. Provide ample swimming space with live rock for grazing and hiding.
Reef Compatibility: With caution. While generally reef safe, they may nip at soft corals or clam mantles, so monitor behaviour closely in reef setups.
Water Parameters: Maintain stable marine conditions with temperature between 24-27°C, salinity at 1.023-1.025, and good water quality with moderate to strong water flow.
Adding a Sohal Tang to your collection brings a dynamic and colourful presence, but it requires commitment to proper care and tank conditions.
