The Sohal Tang (Acanthurus sohal) is a visually stunning marine fish prized for its vivid horizontal stripes and dynamic swimming behaviour. Native to the Red Sea and western Indian Ocean, this species is a popular choice among advanced marine aquarium enthusiasts due to its striking appearance and territorial nature.
Care Level: This tang is best suited to experienced hobbyists because of its territorial temperament and specific husbandry needs. It requires a well-established, spacious aquarium with excellent water quality and strong water movement.
Temperament and Compatibility: The Sohal Tang is known for being highly territorial and aggressive, especially towards conspecifics and similar-shaped tangs. It is recommended to keep only one Sohal Tang per tank or introduce them simultaneously in very large systems to reduce aggression. Compatible tank mates include robust, non-aggressive species that can hold their own without provoking conflict.
Diet: Primarily herbivorous, the Sohal Tang thrives on a diet rich in marine algae and seaweed. Supplement with high-quality dried seaweed sheets, spirulina, and occasional meaty foods to ensure balanced nutrition.
Minimum Tank Size: Due to its active swimming and territorial behaviour, a minimum tank size of 180 litres (approximately 50 gallons) is recommended, though larger is preferable to provide ample swimming space and territories.
Lighting and Water Flow: Moderate to strong lighting supports the growth of natural algae in the aquarium, which benefits grazing. Strong water flow mimics natural reef currents and helps maintain water quality.
Placement: Provide plenty of live rock for grazing and hiding spots to reduce stress. Ensure open swimming areas to accommodate its active nature.
Origin: Red Sea and western Indian Ocean.
Maximum Size: Up to 40 cm (approximately 16 inches) in length.
