The Acanthurus japonicus, commonly known as the Japanese Surgeonfish, is a beautifully patterned tang native to the Western Pacific. This medium-sized fish is prized for its unique colouration and active swimming behaviour, making it a captivating addition to larger marine aquariums.
Care Level: Intermediate to Advanced. This species requires stable water conditions and a mature tank environment.
Temperament: Generally semi-aggressive. Suitable tank mates include other tangs and robust reef-safe species, but caution is advised when housing with smaller, timid fish.
Diet: Primarily herbivorous. Provide a varied diet rich in marine algae, seaweed sheets (nori), and supplemented with high-quality herbivore pellets or flakes. Occasional meaty foods can be offered to ensure balanced nutrition.
Minimum Tank Size: A minimum of 180 litres (approximately 50 gallons) is recommended to provide sufficient swimming space and reduce territorial behaviour.
Reef Safety: With Caution. While generally reef safe, this species may nip at certain sessile invertebrates or soft corals, so monitor behaviour closely.
Lighting and Water Flow: Standard reef aquarium lighting and moderate water flow are suitable to mimic natural conditions.
Placement: Provide ample open swimming areas along with live rock for grazing and shelter.
Origin: Western Pacific, including waters around Japan.
Maximum Size: Typically grows up to 25 cm (10 inches) in length.
Ensure regular water changes and maintain excellent water quality to support the health and longevity of your Acanthurus japonicus. This species benefits from a well-established aquarium with stable parameters and a balanced ecosystem.
