Acanthurus dussumieri, commonly known as Dussumier’s Surgeonfish, is a striking and robust tang species prized by marine aquarium enthusiasts. This extra large specimen is suitable for advanced hobbyists due to its size and specific care needs.
Temperament and Compatibility: Generally semi-aggressive, Dussumier’s Surgeonfish can be territorial, especially towards conspecifics or similar tang species. It is best housed singly or in a large, well-established aquarium with plenty of hiding spaces and swimming room. Avoid keeping with very small or timid fish to reduce stress.
Diet: Primarily herbivorous, this species thrives on a diet rich in marine algae and seaweed. Supplement with high-quality dried seaweed sheets, spirulina, and occasional meaty foods such as mysis or brine shrimp to ensure balanced nutrition.
Tank Requirements: Due to its potential size of up to 40 cm (approximate), a minimum tank size of 250 litres is recommended to provide ample swimming space and maintain water quality. Strong water flow and stable water parameters are essential for optimal health.
Reef Compatibility: With caution. While generally reef safe, this tang may nip at corals or sessile invertebrates, especially if underfed or stressed.
Origin: Indo-Pacific region.
Providing a varied diet, stable environment, and careful tankmate selection will ensure your Acanthurus dussumieri thrives in captivity.
