Acanthurus dussumieri, commonly known as Dussumier’s Surgeonfish, is a large and visually impressive tang that makes a stunning addition to spacious marine aquariums. This XXL variant is suitable for experienced aquarists who can provide the necessary environment and care.
Temperament and Compatibility: Generally peaceful, Acanthurus dussumieri can coexist with other tangs and similarly sized fish, but territorial disputes may occur, especially in smaller tanks. It is best housed singly or in a very large aquarium with ample swimming space to reduce aggression.
Diet: Primarily herbivorous, this species thrives on a diet rich in marine algae and seaweed. Supplement with high-quality herbivore flakes, pellets, and occasional meaty foods to ensure balanced nutrition.
Tank Requirements: Due to its large adult size, a minimum tank size of 250 litres is recommended, with plenty of open swimming areas and live rock for grazing. Stable water parameters and excellent filtration are essential to maintain health.
Reef Compatibility: With caution. While generally reef safe, Acanthurus dussumieri may nip at corals or sessile invertebrates, so monitoring is advised.
Care Level: Moderate to advanced. Requires stable water conditions and a well-maintained environment.
