Gymnothorax funebris, commonly referred to as the Green Moray Eel, is a large and captivating marine fish prized by experienced hobbyists. Known for its robust size and striking appearance, this eel demands a well-maintained, spacious aquarium with secure lids to prevent escape.
Care Level: Advanced. Due to its size and predatory nature, Gymnothorax funebris is recommended for aquarists with prior experience in keeping large marine eels.
Temperament and Compatibility: This species is generally territorial and predatory. It should be housed with similarly sized or larger tank mates to avoid predation. Avoid small or slow-moving fish that may be seen as prey.
Diet: Carnivorous. Feed a varied diet of meaty foods such as fresh or frozen fish, squid, and crustaceans. Feeding should be done in the evening or at night when the eel is most active.
Minimum Tank Size: A minimum of 300 litres (approximately 80 gallons) is recommended to provide adequate swimming space and hiding places.
Lighting and Water Flow: Moderate lighting is sufficient. Provide moderate water flow to mimic natural reef environments without causing stress.
Placement: Provide plenty of rockwork and crevices for shelter. Ensure the aquarium has a secure lid as moray eels are known escape artists.
Origin: Western Atlantic, including the Caribbean Sea.
Maximum Size: Can grow up to 2 metres in length in the wild; however, captive specimens typically remain smaller.
