Overview: Rhinoptera spp., commonly referred to as cownose rays, are a genus of eagle rays known for their distinctive rounded pectoral fins and gentle swimming style. These rays are a captivating addition to large marine aquariums but require expert care and ample space due to their active nature and size potential.
Care Level: Moderate to advanced. Rhinoptera spp. demand stable water parameters, high water quality, and a suitably large tank to accommodate their swimming needs.
Temperament and Compatibility: Generally peaceful and shy, these rays coexist best with non-aggressive tank mates. Avoid housing with small, delicate fish or invertebrates that may be disturbed or preyed upon. Suitable companions include larger, calm fish species.
Diet: Carnivorous bottom feeders. Their diet should consist of a variety of meaty foods such as molluscs, crustaceans, and specialised ray pellets. Feeding should be done carefully to ensure they receive adequate nutrition without overfeeding the tank.
Tank Requirements: Due to their active swimming behaviour and potential growth, a minimum tank size of 500 litres is recommended for small specimens, with larger tanks preferred as they grow. A sandy substrate is essential to protect their delicate undersides and allow natural foraging behaviour.
Water Parameters: Maintain stable marine conditions with temperature between 24-27°C, salinity at 1.023-1.025 SG, and excellent filtration to ensure high water quality.
Lighting and Placement: Standard marine aquarium lighting is sufficient. Provide open swimming areas with minimal obstructions and a soft substrate. Placement should prioritise tank zones with gentle water flow to mimic natural habitats.
Origin and Size: Origin varies by species within the Rhinoptera genus. Maximum size can reach up to 90 cm disc width in some species, but small specimens are suitable for initial aquarium introduction.
