The Dactyloptena orientalis, or Oriental Flying Gurnard, is a captivating marine fish known for its large, wing-like pectoral fins that it spreads when threatened or displaying. This species is a bottom-dweller, typically found resting on sandy or muddy substrates in the wild.
Care Level: Moderate to advanced. This fish requires stable water parameters and a suitably sized aquarium.
Temperament and Compatibility: Generally peaceful but may be shy. Best kept with non-aggressive tankmates. Avoid housing with very small fish or invertebrates that may be seen as prey.
Diet: Carnivorous. Feed a varied diet of meaty foods such as frozen or live crustaceans, mysis shrimp, and finely chopped seafood. Regular feeding 1-2 times daily is recommended.
Tank Requirements: Minimum tank size of 120 litres (approximately 30 gallons) to provide sufficient floor space. A sandy substrate is essential to mimic natural habitat and allow natural foraging behaviour. Provide ample hiding places using rocks or marine décor.
Water Parameters: Maintain stable marine conditions with temperature between 24-27°C, salinity 1.023-1.025 SG, pH 8.1-8.4, and moderate water flow.
Lighting: Standard marine aquarium lighting is suitable; no special requirements.
Origin: Indo-Pacific region.
Maximum Size: Up to 25 cm (10 inches) in length.
