Dactyloptena macracantha, commonly known as the Spotfin Lionfish or Large Flying Gurnard, is a captivating marine fish prized for its elaborate pectoral fins and distinctive appearance. This species is a bottom-dweller, often seen resting on sandy substrates where it uses its fin rays to ‘walk’ along the tank floor.
Care Level: This species is best suited for advanced marine aquarists due to its specialised care requirements and large adult size.
Temperament and Compatibility: Generally peaceful but may be territorial towards similar bottom-dwelling species. It coexists well with larger, non-aggressive tank mates. Avoid housing with small, delicate fish that may be seen as prey.
Diet: Carnivorous. Requires a varied diet of meaty foods such as live or frozen crustaceans, small fish, and other marine protein sources. Feeding should be frequent to maintain health.
Tank Requirements: Minimum tank size recommended is 180 litres (approximately 50 gallons) to provide ample floor space and swimming room. A sandy substrate with plenty of hiding places and low to moderate water flow is ideal.
Lighting and Water Flow: Moderate lighting is sufficient. Water flow should be gentle to moderate to mimic natural habitat conditions and avoid stress.
Origin: Not Provided.
Maximum Size: Can reach up to 30 cm in length.
Reef Safety: With Caution. May prey on small invertebrates and fish; not recommended for reef tanks with small or delicate inhabitants.
