Trachinotus goodei, commonly referred to as the Permit, is a large, robust marine fish belonging to the Carangidae family. Known for its distinctive silver body and deep, laterally compressed shape, this species is a captivating addition to suitably sized marine aquaria.
Care Level: This species is recommended for advanced marine aquarists due to its size and specific husbandry needs.
Temperament and Compatibility: The Permit is generally peaceful but can be skittish. It is best housed with other large, non-aggressive fish. Avoid keeping with small, timid species as it may outcompete them for food.
Diet: Trachinotus goodei is carnivorous and thrives on a varied diet including high-quality frozen or live meaty foods such as shrimp, squid, and fish fillets. Supplement with formulated marine pellets to ensure balanced nutrition.
Tank Requirements: Due to its large adult size, a minimum tank size of 500 litres is recommended. Provide ample open swimming space and robust filtration to maintain excellent water quality.
Water Parameters: Maintain stable marine conditions with temperature between 24-27°C, salinity at 1.020-1.025 SG, and pH 8.1-8.4.
Reef Compatibility: With Caution. While not inherently reef destructive, the Permit’s size and activity level may stress smaller reef inhabitants.
Origin: Native to the western Atlantic Ocean, including the Caribbean Sea and Gulf of Mexico.
Maximum Size: Can grow up to 90 cm in captivity, requiring ample space for healthy development.
