The Platax teira, commonly known as the batfish, is a captivating addition to larger marine aquariums. This medium-sized, tank-bred specimen offers a unique silhouette and graceful swimming behaviour, making it a favourite among experienced hobbyists.
Care Level: Moderate to advanced care is recommended due to its size and specific husbandry needs.
Temperament: Generally peaceful and sociable, Platax teira can coexist with a variety of similarly sized, non-aggressive tank mates. Avoid housing with overly aggressive or very small fish to prevent stress or predation.
Diet: Omnivorous. Provide a varied diet including high-quality marine pellets, frozen mysis shrimp, brine shrimp, and occasional vegetable matter to ensure optimal health.
Minimum Tank Size: A minimum of 180 litres (approximately 50 gallons) is advised to accommodate swimming space and growth potential.
Lighting Requirements: Standard marine aquarium lighting is sufficient; no specialised lighting is necessary.
Water Flow: Moderate water movement mimicking natural reef currents is ideal to keep the fish comfortable and healthy.
Placement: Provide ample open swimming areas with some rockwork or coral structures for shelter. Ensure the tank is well-established with stable water parameters.
Origin: Tank-bred in controlled aquaculture facilities, reducing wild collection impact and improving acclimation to captive conditions.
Maximum Size: Typically reaches up to 30 cm (12 inches) in captivity.
Reef Safe: With caution. While generally peaceful, they may nip at small invertebrates or delicate corals.
