The Yellowtail Snapper (Ocyurus chrysurus) is a popular choice among marine aquarium enthusiasts due to its bright yellow tail and attractive streamlined body. Native to the western Atlantic Ocean, this species is known for its active swimming behaviour and schooling tendencies in the wild.
Care Level: Moderate. This species requires stable water conditions and a suitably sized aquarium to accommodate its active nature.
Temperament: Generally peaceful but can be semi-aggressive towards smaller or more timid tankmates. Best kept with similarly sized or larger non-aggressive fish.
Diet: Omnivorous. Feed a varied diet including high-quality marine pellets, frozen mysis shrimp, brine shrimp, and occasional meaty foods to ensure optimal health.
Minimum Tank Size: At least 180 litres (approximately 50 gallons) to provide ample swimming space.
Lighting and Water Flow: Standard marine aquarium lighting is suitable. Moderate water flow mimicking natural reef currents is recommended to keep the fish comfortable and healthy.
Placement: Mid to upper water column. Provide plenty of open swimming space with some rockwork or coral structures for shelter.
Reef Safety: With Caution. While generally reef safe, Yellowtail Snappers may prey on small invertebrates and should be monitored in reef setups.
Origin: Western Atlantic Ocean, including the Caribbean Sea and Gulf of Mexico.
Maximum Size: Up to 35 cm (14 inches) in captivity.
Providing a well-maintained environment with stable water parameters and a balanced diet will help ensure your Yellowtail Snapper thrives in your marine aquarium.
