Rhinomuraena quaesita, commonly known as the Yellow Ribbon Moray Eel, is a visually captivating species prized by marine aquarium hobbyists for its vibrant yellow coloration and slender, ribbon-like body. This eel is a fascinating addition to a mature marine aquarium, offering both beauty and intrigue.
Care Level: Moderate to Advanced. Due to its specialised dietary needs and behaviour, it is recommended for experienced keepers.
Temperament: Generally peaceful but can be shy and secretive. It may become territorial with other morays or similar-shaped eels.
Diet: Carnivorous. Requires a diet of meaty foods such as live or frozen crustaceans, fish, and molluscs. Feeding should be regular and varied to maintain health.
Minimum Tank Size: A minimum of 150 litres (approximately 40 gallons) is recommended to provide adequate space and hiding places.
Lighting Requirements: Standard marine aquarium lighting is sufficient. Avoid overly bright lighting as the eel prefers dimmer environments or shaded areas.
Water Flow: Moderate water flow is ideal to mimic natural reef conditions without stressing the eel.
Placement: Provide plenty of live rock with crevices and caves for hiding. The eel is nocturnal and appreciates secure shelters during the day.
Origin: Indo-Pacific region.
Maximum Size: Typically grows up to 1 metre in length.
Reef Safe: With Caution. While generally safe with larger, non-aggressive fish, it may prey on small fish and invertebrates.
When housing Rhinomuraena quaesita, ensure the aquarium is securely covered as moray eels are known escape artists. Regular water quality monitoring and stable parameters are essential for their wellbeing.
