Monodactylus argenteus, commonly known as the Silver Moony, is a visually captivating fish prized for its shiny silver body and distinctive shape. This species is native to estuarine and coastal waters of the Indo-Pacific region, often found in brackish environments.
In the aquarium, Silver Moonies are best kept in groups due to their schooling nature, which helps reduce stress and encourages natural behaviour. They are generally peaceful and compatible with other non-aggressive tank mates.
Care Requirements:
- Tank Size: Minimum 150 litres to accommodate their active swimming and schooling behaviour.
- Water Conditions: Brackish to fully marine water with stable parameters; salinity around 1.020–1.025 specific gravity is ideal.
- Diet: Omnivorous; feed a varied diet including high-quality flakes, pellets, frozen and live foods such as brine shrimp and mysis shrimp.
- Temperament: Peaceful and social; best kept in groups of 5 or more.
- Compatibility: Suitable with other peaceful species; avoid aggressive or very small fish that may be bullied or eaten.
Regular water changes and good filtration are essential to maintain water quality. Providing open swimming space with some hiding spots mimics their natural habitat and promotes wellbeing.
