The French Grunt (Haemulon flavolineatum) is a visually captivating snapper native to the western Atlantic Ocean, including the Caribbean Sea. Recognisable by its bright yellow longitudinal stripes on a silver body, this species is a popular choice for marine aquarists seeking active, peaceful fish that thrive in reef-compatible environments.
Temperament and Compatibility: Generally peaceful, the French Grunt coexists well with other non-aggressive fish species. It is best kept in groups or pairs to mimic natural schooling behaviour, which helps reduce stress and encourages natural activity. Avoid housing with overly aggressive or very large predatory fish.
Diet: This species is carnivorous and thrives on a varied diet including meaty foods such as mysis shrimp, brine shrimp, finely chopped seafood, and high-quality marine pellets or flakes formulated for carnivores.
Tank Requirements: Due to its active swimming nature and potential adult size of up to 25 cm, a minimum tank size of 250 litres is recommended. Provide ample open swimming space with some rockwork or caves for shelter. The French Grunt is suitable for reef aquariums and is considered reef safe with caution, as it may occasionally nip at small invertebrates.
Water Parameters: Maintain stable marine conditions with temperature between 24-27°C, pH 8.1-8.4, salinity 1.023-1.025 SG, and moderate water flow. Regular water changes and good filtration are essential to keep water quality high.
Overall, the French Grunt is an excellent addition to a well-established marine aquarium, offering vibrant colour and peaceful behaviour when cared for according to best practices.
