Genicanthus watanabei, commonly known as the Watanabe’s Angelfish, is a visually stunning marine fish prized for its elegant coloration and peaceful nature. The male displays distinctive markings that make it a captivating addition to any mature reef aquarium.
Temperament and Compatibility: This species is generally peaceful and can be kept with other non-aggressive fish. However, it is best housed singly or in a mated pair to avoid territorial disputes. Avoid keeping with highly aggressive or very small fish that may be seen as prey.
Diet: Genicanthus watanabei is omnivorous and thrives on a varied diet including high-quality marine angelfish pellets, frozen mysis shrimp, brine shrimp, and marine algae. Regular feeding 2-3 times daily is recommended to maintain optimal health.
Tank Requirements: A minimum tank size of 180 litres (approximately 50 US gallons) is advised to provide ample swimming space. Stable water parameters with a temperature range of 24-27°C, pH 8.1-8.4, and salinity of 1.023-1.025 are essential.
Reef Compatibility: With caution. While generally reef safe, Genicanthus watanabei may nip at sessile invertebrates or coral polyps if underfed or stressed. Providing sufficient natural algae and supplemental feeding can reduce this behaviour.
Origin: Native to the Western Pacific Ocean, particularly around Japan and Taiwan.
Maximum Size: Typically grows up to 20 cm (8 inches) in length.
Lighting and Water Flow: Moderate lighting and moderate water flow are suitable to mimic natural reef conditions.
Placement: Provide plenty of live rock for grazing and hiding places to reduce stress and encourage natural behaviour.
