The Blue Scaly Clam (Tridacna squamosa) is a spectacular addition to any marine reef aquarium. Known for its vibrant blue mantle and characteristic scaly shell edges, this clam can grow significantly larger in the wild but is available here at a manageable 8cm size, suitable for experienced hobbyists.
Care Level: Moderate to advanced. Requires stable water parameters and strong lighting to thrive.
Feeding: Primarily photosynthetic, relying on symbiotic zooxanthellae within its tissues. Supplementary feeding with phytoplankton or specialised clam foods can support growth and health.
Lighting Requirements: High-intensity lighting such as T5, LED, or metal halide is essential to support photosynthesis.
Water Flow: Moderate, indirect flow is preferred to prevent mantle damage while ensuring nutrient exchange.
Placement: Position on a stable, sandy or rubble substrate area with ample light exposure. Avoid placing near aggressive corals or fish that may nip at the mantle.
Compatibility: Reef safe with caution. Generally peaceful but vulnerable to predation or damage from certain fish and invertebrates.
Tank Size: Minimum 150 litres recommended to maintain stable water quality and accommodate growth.
Regular water changes and monitoring of calcium, alkalinity, and magnesium levels will support shell development and overall health.
