The Blue Scaly Clam (Tridacna squamosa) is a spectacular addition to any marine reef aquarium, prized for its vibrant blue mantle and characteristic scaly shell edges. This clam reaches approximately 9cm in size, making it suitable for established reef systems.
Care Requirements: This species thrives under strong, full-spectrum lighting to support its symbiotic zooxanthellae algae, which provide much of its nutritional needs through photosynthesis. Moderate water flow is recommended to ensure adequate gas exchange and to prevent detritus accumulation around the clam.
Feeding: While primarily photosynthetic, the Blue Scaly Clam benefits from supplemental feeding of phytoplankton or specialised clam foods, especially in lower light conditions or during acclimation.
Compatibility and Reef Safety: Generally reef safe, this clam coexists peacefully with other invertebrates and fish. Avoid placing near aggressive corals or species that may nip at its mantle.
Placement: Position the clam on a stable, sandy or rubble substrate area with ample light exposure. Avoid sudden changes in lighting or water parameters to reduce stress.
With proper care, the Blue Scaly Clam can be a long-lived and visually striking inhabitant of your marine aquarium.
