Tridacna derasa, or the Derasa Clam, is a prized addition to marine reef aquariums due to its impressive size and vibrant mantle colours. This clam species can grow substantially larger over time, making it suitable for experienced hobbyists with established tanks.
Care Level: Moderate to advanced care is recommended. Stable water parameters and strong lighting are essential for optimal health.
Feeding: While Derasa Clams derive most of their nutrition from photosynthetic symbiotic algae (zooxanthellae) within their mantles, they also benefit from supplemental feeding of phytoplankton or specialised clam foods, especially in lower nutrient systems.
Compatibility & Reef Safety: Tridacna derasa is reef safe and generally peaceful, but care should be taken to avoid placing them near aggressive corals or fish that may nip at their mantles. They coexist well with other invertebrates and reef-safe fish.
Lighting & Water Flow: Provide moderate to strong lighting, ideally from metal halide, T5, or high-output LED systems to support photosynthesis. Water flow should be moderate to low to prevent mantle damage while ensuring adequate nutrient exchange.
Placement: Position the clam on a stable, sandy or rubble substrate where it can attach securely. Avoid areas with strong direct flow or shadowing from corals or rockwork.
Tank Size: A minimum of 150 litres (40 gallons) is recommended to accommodate growth and maintain stable water quality.
Regular monitoring of calcium, alkalinity, and magnesium levels is important to support shell growth. Maintain pristine water conditions with stable temperature and salinity.
