Tridacna derasa, or the Derasa Clam, is a spectacular addition to any mature reef aquarium. Known for its smooth, elongated shell and vibrant mantle colours, this clam can become a stunning focal point in your marine setup.
Care Level: Moderate to advanced. Requires stable water parameters and strong lighting.
Lighting: High-intensity lighting is essential to support the clam’s symbiotic zooxanthellae algae, which provide much of its nutritional needs through photosynthesis.
Water Flow: Moderate, indirect water flow is preferred to avoid damaging the delicate mantle while ensuring adequate nutrient exchange.
Feeding: Primarily relies on photosynthesis but benefits from occasional supplementation with phytoplankton or specialised clam foods, especially in lower light conditions.
Compatibility: Reef safe with caution. Generally peaceful but avoid housing with aggressive fish or invertebrates that may nip at the mantle.
Placement: Place on a stable, sandy or rubble substrate area with ample light exposure. Avoid shaded or heavily shaded areas.
Tank Size: Minimum 150 litres recommended to maintain stable water quality and accommodate growth.
Origin: Indo-Pacific region.
Maximum Size: Up to 30cm in length under optimal conditions.
Regular water testing and maintenance are crucial to ensure the health and longevity of your Derasa Clam. Avoid sudden changes in water chemistry and maintain calcium and alkalinity levels suitable for invertebrates.
