Tripneustes gratilla, commonly known as the Collector Sea Urchin, is a popular medium-sized sea urchin prized for its algae grazing capabilities and reef-safe behaviour. This species is an excellent addition to marine aquariums where natural algae control is desired.
Care Level: Easy to moderate. Tripneustes gratilla is hardy but requires stable water parameters and a mature tank environment.
Diet: Primarily herbivorous, feeding on various types of algae including film algae and macroalgae. Supplement with dried seaweed (nori) or specialised herbivore pellets if natural algae is insufficient.
Compatibility: Reef safe and generally peaceful, compatible with most invertebrates and fish. Avoid housing with aggressive predators such as large wrasses or triggerfish that may harm the urchin.
Tank Requirements: Minimum recommended tank size is 75 litres (20 gallons) to provide adequate space and stable water conditions. Ensure good water quality with regular maintenance.
Lighting and Water Flow: Moderate lighting and moderate water flow are ideal to support algae growth and maintain urchin health.
Placement: Place on live rock or substrate where algae growth is present. Avoid areas with strong direct flow that may dislodge the urchin.
Additional Notes: Tripneustes gratilla can help maintain algae balance in reef tanks but should not be relied upon as the sole method of algae control. Monitor for signs of stress or spine loss, which may indicate water quality issues.
