Trapezia rufopunctata is a beautifully marked coral guard crab native to tropical reef environments. Recognisable by its distinctive red spotting, this species plays a vital role in protecting coral hosts from predators such as crown-of-thorns starfish and other coral-eating pests.
These crabs form a mutualistic relationship with branching corals, often residing within the branches and actively defending their home. Their presence can contribute to the overall health and resilience of reef systems in captivity.
Care and Husbandry
- Feeding: Omnivorous scavengers, they benefit from a varied diet including meaty marine foods such as mysis shrimp, finely chopped seafood, and occasional algae-based supplements.
- Compatibility: Generally peaceful towards other reef inhabitants but may exhibit territorial behaviour towards conspecifics or similar crab species. Best kept singly or as a mated pair in larger tanks.
- Reef Safety: Yes, these crabs are considered reef safe and do not harm corals; instead, they protect them.
- Tank Requirements: A minimum tank size of 75 litres (20 gallons) is recommended to provide sufficient space and stable water parameters.
- Water Parameters: Maintain stable marine conditions with temperature between 24-27°C, salinity 1.023-1.025, and good water quality.
Placement
Introduce Trapezia rufopunctata into established reef tanks with healthy branching corals such as Pocillopora or Acropora species. They will seek shelter within coral branches, so ensure suitable hosts are present.
Additional Notes
These crabs are not commonly tank-bred, so sourcing from reputable suppliers is advised. Their role as coral guardians makes them a valuable addition to reef aquaria focused on natural pest control.
