The Parupeneus multifasciatus, commonly known as the many-banded goatfish, is a visually captivating species prized in the marine aquarium hobby. This medium-sized fish displays distinctive banding patterns and vibrant colours, making it a standout addition to any large marine setup.
Care Level: Moderate to advanced. This species requires stable water conditions and a well-maintained environment to flourish.
Temperament and Compatibility: Generally peaceful but active, the many-banded goatfish can coexist with a variety of tank mates. It is best housed with similarly sized, non-aggressive species. Avoid keeping with very small or timid fish that may be outcompeted for food.
Diet: Omnivorous. In the aquarium, provide a varied diet including meaty foods such as mysis shrimp, brine shrimp, and finely chopped seafood, supplemented with high-quality marine pellets or flakes. Feeding multiple times daily in small amounts is recommended to mimic natural foraging behaviour.
Tank Requirements: A minimum tank size of 180 litres (approximately 50 gallons) is advised to accommodate its active swimming and foraging habits. The aquarium should include a sandy substrate to allow natural digging behaviour, along with live rock for shelter and grazing.
Lighting and Water Flow: Standard marine aquarium lighting is sufficient. Moderate water flow is preferred to simulate natural reef conditions without causing stress.
Reef Compatibility: With caution. While generally reef safe, they may disturb small invertebrates or corals when foraging in the substrate.
Origin: Not Provided.
Maximum Size: Approximately 20 cm (8 inches).
