The Parupeneus barberinus, commonly known as the Blackspot Goatfish, is a captivating addition to larger marine aquariums. This extra large specimen displays the characteristic elongated body with a distinctive black spot near the tail, and vibrant colouration that adds dynamic movement and interest to your tank.
Goatfish are active foragers, using their barbels to sift through the substrate in search of small invertebrates. This natural behaviour not only provides enrichment but also helps in substrate aeration. Due to their size and activity level, the extra large Parupeneus barberinus requires a well-established aquarium with ample swimming space and a sandy or fine gravel substrate to facilitate natural foraging.
Care Level: Moderate to advanced. Suitable for experienced hobbyists who can maintain stable water parameters and provide a suitably sized environment.
Temperament: Generally peaceful but may show territorial behaviour towards conspecifics or similar species. Compatible with a variety of other marine fish when given sufficient space.
Diet: Carnivorous. Feed a varied diet including meaty foods such as mysis shrimp, brine shrimp, chopped seafood, and specialised marine pellets or flakes formulated for carnivores.
Minimum Tank Size: Recommended 300 litres (approximately 80 gallons) or larger to accommodate their active swimming and foraging behaviour.
Reef Safe: With Caution. While generally reef compatible, they may disturb small invertebrates and corals when foraging in the substrate.
Lighting and Water Flow: Standard marine aquarium lighting and moderate water flow are suitable. Avoid overly strong currents that may stress the fish.
Placement: Best kept in a tank with a sandy substrate and plenty of open swimming space. Provide hiding spots with live rock formations to reduce stress.
Origin: Indo-Pacific region.
Maximum Size: Up to 40 cm (approximately 16 inches).
