Parupeneus bifasciatus, commonly referred to as the Bicolor Goatfish, is a visually striking species prized for its unique two-tone colouration and active bottom-foraging behaviour. This small goatfish is a peaceful addition to marine aquariums, particularly suited to larger reef or fish-only setups where it can thrive.
Care and Husbandry: Parupeneus bifasciatus requires a minimum tank size of 180 litres (approximately 50 gallons) to accommodate its active swimming and foraging habits. A sandy substrate is essential to allow natural digging behaviour as it searches for small invertebrates and detritus. The tank should be well established with stable water parameters and moderate water flow.
Temperament and Compatibility: This species is generally peaceful and compatible with a variety of other non-aggressive marine fish. It is best kept with similarly sized or larger tank mates to avoid stress. Avoid housing with overly aggressive species that may bully or outcompete it for food.
Diet: Parupeneus bifasciatus is carnivorous and thrives on a varied diet including meaty foods such as mysis shrimp, brine shrimp, finely chopped seafood, and specialised marine pellets or flakes formulated for carnivorous fish. Feeding multiple small meals daily is recommended to mimic natural foraging.
Reef Safety: This goatfish is considered reef safe with caution. While it generally does not harm corals, it may disturb delicate invertebrates or small crustaceans during its substrate foraging. Monitor interactions carefully in reef systems.
Lighting and Water Flow: Standard marine aquarium lighting is suitable. Moderate water flow replicates natural reef conditions and supports healthy behaviour.
Origin and Size: Native to the Indo-Pacific region, Parupeneus bifasciatus typically reaches a maximum size of around 20 cm (8 inches) in captivity.
