Parupeneus barberinoides, commonly known as the small goatfish, is a captivating addition to marine aquariums. This species is appreciated for its vibrant colours and active foraging behaviour, often seen sifting through sandy substrates in search of food.
Care Level: Moderate. This species requires stable water conditions and a well-established aquarium.
Temperament: Peaceful and generally compatible with other non-aggressive fish. It is best kept with similarly sized or larger tank mates.
Diet: Carnivorous. Feed a varied diet including meaty foods such as mysis shrimp, brine shrimp, finely chopped seafood, and high-quality marine pellets. Regular feeding encourages natural foraging behaviour.
Tank Requirements: A minimum tank size of 180 litres (approximately 40 gallons) is recommended to provide ample swimming space. A sandy substrate is essential to allow natural digging and foraging.
Reef Compatibility: With caution. While generally reef safe, this species may disturb small invertebrates and soft corals due to its digging habits.
Water Parameters: Maintain stable marine conditions with temperature between 24-27°C, salinity 1.023-1.025, pH 8.1-8.4, and moderate water flow.
Origin: Indo-Pacific region.
Maximum Size: Up to 20 cm (8 inches).
Adding Parupeneus barberinoides to your marine aquarium brings both activity and colour, but ensure the tank setup supports its natural behaviours for optimal health and longevity.
