Parupeneus barberinoides, commonly referred to as the Barberine Goatfish, is a captivating marine fish prized for its active foraging and striking appearance. This medium-sized species is best suited to well-established marine aquariums with ample space and a sandy substrate to allow natural digging behaviour.
Care Level: Moderate to advanced. This species requires stable water parameters and a suitably sized tank to thrive.
Temperament and Compatibility: Generally peaceful but can be territorial with conspecifics or similar species. Compatible with a variety of peaceful to semi-aggressive tank mates. Avoid housing with very small or timid fish that may be outcompeted for food.
Diet: Carnivorous. Feeds primarily on benthic invertebrates such as worms, small crustaceans, and molluscs. In captivity, offer a varied diet including frozen mysis shrimp, brine shrimp, chopped seafood, and high-quality marine pellets or flakes.
Tank Requirements: Minimum tank size of 180 litres (approximately 50 gallons) to provide sufficient swimming space and substrate for natural foraging. A sandy or fine gravel substrate is essential to allow the goatfish to sift through the sand in search of food.
Lighting and Water Flow: Standard reef lighting is suitable. Moderate water flow mimicking natural reef currents is recommended to maintain water quality and oxygenation.
Placement: Best placed in the middle to lower regions of the aquarium where it can forage comfortably. Ensure the tank has plenty of hiding spots and open sandy areas.
Origin: Indo-Pacific region.
Maximum Size: Up to 25 cm (10 inches).
Reef Safety: With Caution. While generally reef safe, this species may disturb small invertebrates and soft corals when foraging in the substrate.
