The Plectorhinchus chaetodonoides, often referred to as the Harlequin Sweetlips, is a captivating marine fish prized for its unique spotted appearance and graceful swimming behaviour. This medium-sized species is best suited for advanced marine aquarium hobbyists due to its size and specific care needs.
Temperament and Compatibility: Generally peaceful and shy, the Harlequin Sweetlips can coexist with other non-aggressive tank mates. It is advisable to avoid housing it with very small fish or invertebrates, as it may view them as prey. Compatibility with other large, peaceful fish is usually good.
Diet: This species is carnivorous and thrives on a varied diet including meaty foods such as mysis shrimp, chopped seafood, and specialised marine pellets. Feeding should be done 1-2 times daily to maintain optimal health.
Tank Requirements: Due to its potential adult size, a minimum tank size of 180 litres (approximately 50 gallons) is recommended to provide ample swimming space. The aquarium should have plenty of hiding spots created by live rock formations to help reduce stress.
Water Parameters and Environment: Stable marine conditions with a temperature range of 24-27°C, pH between 8.1-8.4, and salinity of 1.023-1.025 specific gravity are ideal. Moderate water flow and lighting are suitable, mimicking its natural reef habitat.
Additional Notes: This species is not reef safe as it may prey on small invertebrates and fish. Regular monitoring and a well-maintained environment will ensure the health and longevity of your Harlequin Sweetlips.
