The Arothron Mappa, commonly referred to as the Map Puffer, is a captivating marine fish prized for its intricate maze-like markings and unique appearance. This small-sized pufferfish is a fascinating addition to a mature marine aquarium, offering both visual appeal and interesting behaviour.
Care Level: Moderate to advanced. Due to its specific dietary needs and temperament, this species is best suited for aquarists with some experience in marine fish care.
Temperament and Compatibility: The Arothron Mappa is generally semi-aggressive and can be territorial, especially towards other puffers or slow-moving tankmates. It is advisable to keep this species singly or with robust, non-aggressive fish. Avoid housing with small, delicate species that may be harassed.
Diet: This pufferfish is carnivorous and requires a varied diet including hard-shelled foods such as molluscs, crustaceans, and specialised frozen or prepared marine diets to help wear down its continuously growing teeth.
Tank Requirements: A minimum tank size of 150 litres (approximately 40 US gallons) is recommended to provide ample swimming space and territory. The aquarium should be well-established with stable water parameters, plenty of hiding places, and a secure lid as puffers are known jumpers.
Water Conditions: Maintain temperature between 24-27°C, salinity at 1.020-1.025 SG, and stable pH around 8.1-8.4. Moderate water flow is preferred to mimic natural reef environments without causing stress.
Reef Safety: With Caution. The Arothron Mappa may nip at invertebrates and corals, so it is not recommended for sensitive reef tanks.
Overall, the Arothron Mappa is a rewarding species for those prepared to meet its care requirements, offering a unique and engaging presence in a marine aquarium.
